Renting a Motorhome, RV or Campervan

Renting a Motorhome, RV or Campervan, How do you do it on the cheap

Traveling in a RV, motorhome or for a family or a camper van for backpackers is a great way to see the countryside and visit those remote parts you can’t get to by public transport.

I’ll show you how. If you are going to rent or even buy a car and then pay for accommodation each night why not rent a motorhome, RV or campervan instead? or even better if you own a motorhome or RV why not exchange your motorhome?

You immediately save the motel or accommodation costs and the money saved by being able to make your own breakfast, lunches and dinners is huge. Don't forget that tea and coffee can also cost a fortune if you need to buy that each day.

Sometimes in Australia you can rent a motorhome or RV for as little as $40 per day. This makes for a cheap bed – especially if you share the cost of renting the van.

You can also register to relocate motorhomes and campervans and this can cost just the price of the fuel or sometimes you can get an allowance for fuel but you have to be flexible with your dates.

The advantage of renting a RV or Motorhome is it can often be parked overnight in public areas or on quiet back roads so that caravan or trailer park fees are saved too. The Couchsurfing group lists members who can provide overnight parking at their homes.

Having your bed with you saves having to reach the next town to find a cabin or room some-where each day so it also makes for less stressful traveling.

There are a few things you must check before renting a RV, motorhome or campervan for your exciting holiday.

  • Do you need a special driving license? ie Is it a heavy vehicle or is there an age minimum for the driver? You’ll probably need an international drivers license.
  • Can you return it to another location or country?
  • How much will fuel cost?
  • Does your travel insurance cover the vehicle or will you need to pay the hirer's extra fees?
  • Is the vehicle suitable for the roads you want to travel on?
  • Will you be confident driving on the opposite side of the road if necessary?
  • Ensure that your credit card can cover the bond required by the hirer.
  • Wicked Van hire

Cheap Campervan Hire for Backpackers and People on a Budget

You can also hire small vans, Wicked Campers are very popular but you have to be aware of the signwriting on the van which can offend people but it is meant in fun. These small vans have been fitted out for basic sleeping, eating and driving and these are much cheaper but do not have showers or toilets on board.

If you are happy to wash from a bucket or shower at truck stops these vans are a great way to see a country. Often there are no limits on kilometres/miles traveled so again you can explore a whole continent for a basic fee. See Wicked Campers or drive about campers Some of these cheaper campervans also offer relocation options.

Why not exchange or swap your own motorhome, RV or campervan

If you are lucky enough to already own a motorhome in your own country there are now websites where you can exchange or swap your vehicle with another for the period of your holiday. Sometimes there are houses and houseboats available for exchange of motorhomes. Go to www.ukmotorhomes.net and this also provides more links around the world.
