Dog friendly accommodation and other lovely pets

If you are like us you would not even consider putting you dog in a kennel while going on holiday. I couldn’t imagine anything worse than being a dog locked up in a cage for a fortnight away from the people I loved.

There are two options for you and your pets:-

Having someone to come and house sit and also to take care of your animals. Obviously you need to check that this person will take great care of your precious pets and love them almost as much as you. You would need to check references and meet them before hand. So explore house sitting as an option.

An alternative could be a house swap. There are people who would love to take their dogs with them but are limited to dog friendly accommodation and have registered with house swapping organisations. Not everyone allows pets to stay in their homes as a house swap so you would need to check this when you enquire. This is Richard and Delphine's story and their holiday with four dogs.

Cats generally like to be in their own home, taking them to someone else's home can be a disaster. So a house sitter would probably work for you in this instance. You might have many animals, live in the country and even have horses.

So why not try a house-sitter. This way they can mind your house as well as the animals and even look after the garden. Alternatively you could organise a home exchange where you look after someone else's pets and they look after yours. We have also done this and has worked out really well.

This is the best dog friendly accommodation you can get.

I knew someone who had two dogs, two cats, three horses, chickens and two guinea pigs. They didn’t have a holiday for twenty three years – how sad, if he’d known about house sitters then he could have gone away with the family and known everything was good at home, (maybe he was happy to stay at home and have a bit of peace and quiet)! However there are people who are quite experienced with animals who would love to look after your animals and spend time away.

There are databases around, that offer this service and can solve your holiday problems when you have a pet. Knowing your pet is happy and looked after gives you peace of mind.

House sitters are located all over the world. So list yourself on an internet database and scan for a suitable person.

You will need to check references and make sure the person is suitable for your requirements. If possible try and meet them in person before you go.
