Cultural Experiences - Developing an Understanding of Others

Aboriginal family

Cultural Experiences have played a large part of my travel exploits. Ever since I’ve been holidaying through house exchange, Couchsurfing, house sitting or working in an Indigenous community in the north of Australia, I am amazed at the these experiences I encounter. Whether it is eating a meal of cheese with a French family, watching an Aboriginal ceremony, this was an amazing cultural experience, where I was the only white person or learning to drive in Italy ; all of these connections have enriched my life and made me feel different about who I am.

It is so important that we try to understand other cultures and why we do things differently. This way we will overcome fears and find common ground. Understanding happens through living with each other and what a fabulous way to do it through travelling and receiving free accommodation.

While having dinner at a Couchsurfers house one evening, we realized that the people at the table were from four differents continents. It was a really interesting evening with several different languages being spoken.

Life in an Indigenous Community

We spent fifteen months working in an indigenous community and have had many experiences so if you'd like to read a blog about working in an Indigenous community here it is.

So even though this website is about free accommodation the rewards are far more than saving money. These experiences become addictive and make us excited to have more of these connections.
