Converting a Van to a Campervan
Alex's Story When I was backpacking with my boyfriend we wanted to travel around Europe, but also wanted more freedom than staying in backpacker accommodation and traveling on the train; so converting a van to a campervan was an option. We bought a transit van in London for 1000 pounds and did a very basic conversion. It was more comfortable than camping or lugging about heavy backpacks. It wasn't posh but it was practical and what we needed. We even made a profit when we sold it.

We fitted it out with a fold out bed with storage space underneath extra lights, 12volt outlets, a second hand fridge, curtains and the all important washing line.

There are many places to look when buying a van check out the following sites gumtree.com autotrader.co.uk and we even bought a van off ebay.com once.To save money when travelling around Europe we would stop at a caravan site every second or third night so we could have a shower and maybe do some washing if needed. In between we would try to find a quiet little spot to stop out of the way of everyone. I must point out it is illegal to sleep in you car in a lot of countries so do be careful. We mostly cooked our own meals on a camping stove in the campervan with fresh local produce. We loved shopping at the local markets; it’s a great way to experience a new country. Our improvements made it so much easier to sell the van to other backpackers.
