Backpacking - Free Accommodation Around the World
Backpacking – Three ways to get free accommodation while backpacking around the world.Being a backpacker always means you’re on a tight budget and looking for ways to make your money go further – so finding ways to save money while travelling is vital for you to be able to travel as long as you want. Here are three ways in which you can travel, see the world, meet amazing people and have memorable experiences and pay nothing for accommodation. It might sound too good to be true and I thought so too until I tried it and thousands of others.

- Staying with locals – Homestay, this might sound a bit boring at first, but there are several websites that have huge databases of people all around the world that want to host. Couchsurfing is the largest site with over 3 million members worldwide and it’s so much more than free accommodation. While travelling in Europe for six months we received over 100 nights accommodation.
- WWOOFing – Willing Workers on Organic Farms. This is where you work for four hours a day on a farm and receive board and lodgings in exchange for the work. Again there are places all over the world.
- Volunteering – There are organisations that need volunteers to do various jobs in third world countries around the world. Lots of organisations charge volunteers to work, but there are many that will be grateful for your donation of time. You need to be sure that you will not hinder the projects that are being worked on – so no precious princesses would be appreciated. Kirsty has been travelling this way for many years check out her site. Nerdy Nomad Blog

This is a couchsurfing gathering that was held in an old farmhouse in Italy. It was really good to meet all these other people. Some were traveling and some were hosts
It's a great way to travel and meet the locals. Accommodation can vary a lot, from staying with students, to staying with families. You get to know the local knowledge on what there is to see and do. So check out the staying with locals page Neil was fruit picking in Australia and discovered there was not much information even though there was work all year round. So he developed a website to tell people all the things you need to know about fruit picking and working visas in Australia.
Backpacking and Working in London

When Alex went to London she also found out lots of information regarding living there - here is her story. Travelling alone for the first time In 2002 I set off on a backpacking adventure to England. I was planning on staying for 12 months, working a little and seeing some of Europe. I was only 18 at the time. When I left I was very nervous. It was my first time out of home and my first time travelling alone. Planning for this trip included: - Saving enough money from a part time job I had while completing school.
- Reading a Lonely Planet on London (my destination)
- Asking people who had been to London the best area to stay.
- Figuring out what sort of accommodation I should go for. In my case a Youth Hostel suited my budget and I knew it would be a great way to meet like minded young travelers.
- Making a budget for myself to try and stick to until I found a job.
I also learnt how to save money while living in London and this wasn't as hard as you'd think it would be and still had a great time partying.
Making new friends Arriving at the YHA in Earls Court London, I was still very nervous but very eager to make some friends. On the second night I realized everyone was in the same boat as me and didn’t know each other. We were all in the lounge watching television and someone suggested we all go to the pub across the road. So everyone did. And from there I didn’t look back! I made so many friends that night, one of which I married eight years later and a few others are still very close friends today. So if you find your self in this situation I suggest you be the one to ask if everyone would like to go to the pub for a drink. Meeting and socializing with these people also taught me a lot. We shared stories and advice on what to do and where to go, and most importantly how to find a job. Finding a job I discovered there is a free magazine in London called TNT Magazine, it also has a great website just for backpackers which comes out once a week. This is full of useful information and stories. In the back was a section advertising jobs and agencies. After a week of phone calls and interviews I was employed as a live in bar person and best of all it was in Oxford Circus. I couldn’t believe my luck. Live in jobs are a great way to start yourself off. You work and live on the premises. Your pay is deducted for your accommodation and sometimes it also includes meals and you can live somewhere (like Oxford Circus) that you other wise would never be able to afford.

The best tool I have found for planning any trip is a Lonely Planet guide book. These books are like gold to any traveler. They give you comprehensive information in every area you need. It offers information in different price categories from budget through to top end. They include accommodation, transport, where to eat, things to see, dangers, maps etc. I have not been to a single country without one and to do so I would feel lost.I spent a lot of time in London and learnt to work, save and travel really well. I did this for six years and have a few stories to tell. One of them is My first visit to a non western country Alex now has her own photography business Zandra Warland Photography -----------------------------------------------------------------
