You think I'm joking - many people say to me - you can't get accommodation for FREE, well you can and in most cases it is far superior than that stuff you pay for.
Backpacking Free Accommoation, around the world, find lots of tips about free accommodation
Two weeks ago I arrived from the UK to visit my sister in Australia; I’ll be here for two months. I’m escaping the British winter as I really feel the cold and want feel some warmth in my bones. Travelling such a long distance, not to mention the cost, I thought should take a bit of time to explore this southern land and being my fourth trip I wanted to see different things from my previous visits.
Being creative with my travel plans was important as I was on a budget and I’m not into the backpacking scene anymore, I decided to have a look at what properties were listed on Home exchange sites. Trawling through the sites can take a bit of time but I found some great places, so the time was well spent. I found three lovely homes and people willing to exchange with me.
I’m currently in Byron Bay in NSW on my first house exchange and my next destination is St Kilda in Melbourne and Shoreham on the Mornington Peninsula. These total five weeks and will keep me occupied for more than half my time in Australia. While in Byron Bay I have the use of the owners car – fantastic!
Most of the lunches and dinners I’ll cook for myself as oppose to eating out and this has already saved a huge amount of money. Of course I’ll go out for coffee regularly and have the occasional meal out but I’ll do it when I feel like it.
- Stay with locals – Couching Surfing is one the organizations you can join for free and explore over 3 million members around the world – fantastic concept. I've had over 100 days free accommodation while traveling around Europe saving $1000's.
- House swapping – if you own a house you can swap with someone else. We’ve done this too. It’s great when you have a family and makes holidays so affordable. Kids love it too.Saving money is really important when you've got a family.
- House sitting – How about looking after someone’s pooch or watering the garden for a week or even a month in a lovely spot like the south of Spain.
- Volunteering Abroad – do you have a skill that you can share. There are many opportunities for volunteering abroad and you get a lot more than free accommodation. The experience is life changing.
- WWOOFING – Worldwide opportunities on organic Farms – This is a huge organisation that list farms all over the world where you can work in exchange for board and lodgings.
- Teaching English – If you have a tesol or similar qualification (you can get one easily if you haven’t) There are many opportunities to teach English to children and adults at various levels from just conversational English to grammatical English. You usually get paid and you often get accommodation
