Free Accommodation Travel Blog

I have been getting free accommodation, saving $1000's for over 20 years and I’m going to share with you how you can have wonderful holidays all over the world and not pay anything for accommodation.

You think I'm joking - many people say to me - you can't get accommodation for FREE, well you can and in most cases it is far superior than that stuff you pay for.

Saves $1000's of dollars by House Swapping

Pamela's Story

Two weeks ago I arrived from the UK to visit my sister in Australia; I’ll be here for two months. I’m escaping the British winter as I really feel the cold and want feel some warmth in my bones. Travelling such a long distance, not to mention the cost, I thought should take a bit of time to explore this southern land and being my fourth trip I wanted to see different things from my previous visits.

Being creative with my travel plans was important as I was on a budget and I’m not into the backpacking scene anymore, I decided to have a look at what properties were listed on Home exchange sites. Trawling through the sites can take a bit of time but I found some great places, so the time was well spent. I found three lovely homes and people willing to exchange with me.

I’m currently in Byron Bay in NSW on my first house exchange and my next destination is St Kilda in Melbourne and Shoreham on the Mornington Peninsula. These total five weeks and will keep me occupied for more than half my time in Australia. While in Byron Bay I have the use of the owners car – fantastic!

The savings I have made are huge:

  • 35 days free accommodation @ $120 a night $4200
  • 21 days car hire @ $65 a day $1365
  • Total $5565

Most of the lunches and dinners I’ll cook for myself as oppose to eating out and this has already saved a huge amount of money. Of course I’ll go out for coffee regularly and have the occasional meal out but I’ll do it when I feel like it.
