Couchsurfing - Not Just Free Accommodation
A pizza night was held in an old farmhouse in the Tuscany countryside. Pizza’s were being made as a joint activity with the guests – yummy simple toppings and of course nuttella for the famous chocolate pizza. About forty five Couchsurfers turned up just for a social occasion. Some had met before and some were traveling through, like ourselves. The information about the evening had been posted on the Florence group forum and the gathering went on until the early hours of the morning laughing, drinking and swapping other globetrotting stories. This is our story of the pizza night in Florence

Another time we met in a bar in Florence where free food was served every Tuesday; again it was where people were able to meet and socialise. We have even met in our local city with a couchsurfing group in; Melbourne Australia for a foodies night (meeting in a cheap restaurant to eat) a couple of times. Much conversation is had about travel and Couchsurfing encounters. More families are being brave and wanting to take their children away with them on a more adventurous holiday, such as backpacking and exploring a road less travelled. Children are not seen as a reason for not travelling. It is an invaluable education for children that are lucky enough to be exposed to this kind of travel; it expands their mind; builds character as well as being fun and adventurous – this applies to the adults too. All this said it is hard work travelling with children, physically and emotionally. One way to make it a little easier and fun is to find some family friendly accommodation with like-minded people. The Couchsurfing Family Welcome group has over 11,000 members and many of them are doing trips like this. Others are fascinated by people on these journeys and want to be part of their adventure.

Couchsurfing groups for older people are also popular, so don’t think if you’re over the backpacking age group Couchsurfing excludes you; absolutely not. So if you feel you’re a little old for this type of activity think again with over 5000 members in the 50's+ Travel Group.

Interest groups like photography, cycling, watersports are all included and then there are life style groups for vegetarians, Christians, football fanatics, pilgrims or gays – there is something for everyone.

Most of the cities have their own group and organize many activities and often meet once a month. Those attending are a mixed lot of locals and travelers. Various activities are organized depending on what people find out. It might be a concert, a festival, a weekend away, a bike ride, a party or a foodies night. So if you’re a traveler and want to meet some locals, explore these group forums and you’d be surprised how many and what topics are covered. I really think Couchsurfing is about meeting people first and the accommodation follows. Have a look at the groups that are listed on Couchsurfing
